Dev diary #1: thousands of soldiers in a browser

The question we hear most often is: how can a browser game show a battle of thousands?

The short answer is that we spend detail only where the player can see it. Close to the camera a soldier is a fully animated figure; farther away it becomes a simplified model; on the horizon it is a cheap sprite. The crowd keeps its shape and its movement, but we do not pay for details nobody can see.

Rules we set for ourselves

  • On a PC, up to five thousand warriors per side can be on screen.
  • On a phone, the number of figures drawn is scaled down so the game stays smooth; the rest of the army joins from the rear in waves.
  • The server decides the result of every battle. The client only shows it.

What is next

We are moving to a new generation of the client with a modern graphics API, better models and animations. When it is ready we will show you a new trailer.
